A RECENT study exploring rates of vancomycin-resistant enterococci and C. difficile in residential aged care facilities RACFs has revealed a surprisingly high level of multi antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli e-coli infection among residents.Published recently in Medical Journal of Australia, the study by Rhonda J Stuart et al found e-coli in 12 per cent of 119 patients tested across three facilities. One facility saw 27 per cent of residents test positive for the same extended-spectrum b-lactamase ESBL-producing strain. This prevalence suggests spread and control relate to contact rates between infected residents as well as practices by health care providers.
