I live in South India, Tamilnadu State. I travel often through Walajapet Municipal bus stand (Vellore District,632512) where there is a Pay & Use lavatory which was auctioned off to the highest bidder. The contractor wants to make his profits at the earliest and he charges Rs. 2/- for passing urine whereas the Municipality has provided in writing to me as per Right to Information Act that the charges fixed were Rs.0.50 (one fourth of the amount the contractor charges the public). I visited Walajapet on 10/04/2011 morning and went to use the Public convenience. The contractor demanded Rs.2/- and when I questioned the contractor, he abused me with unprintable words and slapped me. The contractor was so angry he would have killed me if I had argued further. Now I have written to the Govt authorities about this hypocrisy (they have officially declared the normal charges were such but everywhere the contractors are fleecing the public.). The government and the contractors are making money out of “peeing” and “shitting” from common people whereas the govt is supposed to provide these basic amenities free. There is another free urinal inside the bus stand which is full of shit because the people are reluctant to pay exorbitant charges in Pay & Use lavatories. The municipality also never cleans that place. The NDM-1 bacteria is certainly present in large numbers in India at all street corners where we urinate and defecate openly.
